I just stumbled upon OpenOffice.org which is an open source equivalent of Microsoft Office. It was started in conjunction with Sun Microsystems and a community of techno types who wanted to develop an alternative to Office. It is a similar situation as Firefox and Thunderbird. The programs work on most, if not any system, and they seem to work as well as the Microsoft version. They also can save documents in many different formats. I don’t know very much about it, but I’m trying it out. I think it is great to have this type of technology in the public domain. I also read that Microsoft will be supporting the document format developed by the OpenOffice.org community and that this format will become the international standard. Check it out at OpenOffice.org
